Long story not short...
Yesterday we got up early and went to camp only to leave at 7:30am. We then traveled two hours to Tusla. We first did an interview with a famous reporter who has won many awards, Salih Berkic. He was very animated when we asked him questions (mostly pertaining to his verbal attack on a politician the other day when we were with the Mothers of Srebrenica.) He said that there should not be a line...

This Saturday...
This Saturday we worked at the Emmaus camp. So my group was in given the tasked to dig a ‘canal’ to the river. Well, there already was n existing canal that we could work off of but the problem was that there was a lot of plant undergrowth that we (and by we I mean Katie) had to cut away. Well, when that was done we had to actually dig the canal but we didn’t know where they wanted us to ‘turn’...

Commemoration
So yesterday was the commemoration of the genocide in Srebrenica. As we were walking toward the site, a mass of people were swarming the streets. As we were walking (as well as filming) along the way, many vendors were lined up to sell commemoration pins, head scarves, prayer beads, food, and all sorts of items. Many people were also lined up along the sides of the streets, taking advantage at the...

Film Review: The Big Day
SO this movie was about various weddings going on and the preparations leading up to the event as well as the big day itself. Now this was a very entertaining piece in my opinion. The audience could see all the crazy things the couples were willing to do for their ‘Big Day’- like getting a huge limo, learning the choreography to Dirty Dancing, etc.
It was very entertaining. What I...

Film Review: Two Furnaces for Udarnik Josip Trojko
Well, what can I say about this movie? So there was an old furnace and then the workers in a factory in Croatia replaced the old furnace with a new furnace. It was shot in 16mm film so it had an old 50’s style to it. On top of that, the soundtrack seemed primarily composed of classical music and patriotic band music that somehow tried to give the audience the idea that replacing the furnace...

Film Review: The Boy Who Was a King
Well, today we went and saw the Boy Who Was a King- about Simeon Saxe-Coburg-Gotha who was the last king of Bulgaria and then exiled. He then came back fifty years later to run for prime minister and win. Although he was welcomed back with open arms, his term as prime minister did not go as well.
I enjoyed a lot of the unconventional camera work. One of the first shots you see is of the...

Film Review: Mustafa's Sweet Dreams
Mustafa’s Sweet Dreams is about Mustafa, making baklava in a small village town in Turkey, and wanting to go to Istanbul to become a baklava master. Now, this a documentary- or supposed to be anyway. Now, I really enjoyed the film from just an audience’s standpoint because all the characters where very relatable and it had a substantial beginning, middle, and ending. But that is...

Mirjana Evtov
Today Mirjana Evtov came to talk to us today. She helped create a virtual museum dedicated to the siege of Sarajevo. Coming into the room with her dyed messy dark red hair, and her black ensemble, I, at first, did not know what to make of her. When she spoke she had a Bosnian accent tinted with a hint of English accent. But then, she started her own personal experience during the war. She was one...

So arriving....
Well, I have arrived in Sarajevo.
Getting here wasn’t as bad as I would have expected. Before this I visited my high school friends in Marburg, Germany. Getting there was a nightmare so I assumed coming here would be too. Thankfully it was very smooth since I now knew how to take the Bahn train with confidence from Marburg to Frankfurt. (First off I have to say that I hate the Frankfurt...
